December 2024
We are delighted to bring you the 2nd Edition of the Rat River Health Council 2008 Inc. (RRHC) ENewsletter. As you may know, RRHC was established in 1994 by the community and for the community to pursue quality healthcare services.
We proudly support and promote services provided by the De Salaberry District Health Centre, as well as those by private and non-profit organizations within the RM of De Salaberry and the Village of St-Pierre-Jolys.

Monthly Meeting Highlights
IMPORTANT BY-LAW CHANGES
The purpose is to cover a larger population and add more diversity to the representation. With 30 years of experience, we have a lot to contribute and need a louder voice. We are preparing to meet with current members of our organization and those we propose to include i.e. RM of Ritchot in order to get feedback on our draft amendments. The next step will be an Annual Meeting to adopt these changes
Community Engagement
We were recently invited to partner with nursing students from the Université de Saint-Boniface as part of their practicum in Community Health. This course requires nursing students to discover and become familiar with a community, and to undertake a project that will address a community need. We are the only rural organization out of 8 community partners. Some of you might have spoken to these students. Thank you for your love of our community!
Community Engagement
The H indicating the location of our hospital was replaced with a + when Emergency Room hours were changed from 24 hrs to 12 hrs. We are requesting review of this decision in light of the fact that other communities with H signs have reduced Emergency Room hours.

De Salaberry and Area
Stakeholders Group
RRHC participated in the December 5th meeting. CAO Jane Curtis provided us with a report that spoke to their commitment to listening to front-line staff, the key to retention. She also recognized how busy the De Salaberry District Health Centre is and the need for continued support.
Formed by the Southern Health Regional Health Authority following local requests, this regional group first met in March 2023. It includes representatives from the Village of St-Pierre-Jolys, the Town of Niverville, the RMs of De Salaberry and Ritchot, schools, Chambers of Commerce, seniors’ residences, and more. These quarterly meetings address matters crucial to our residents’ wellness.

Southern Health RHA News
Many rural Emergency Rooms face shortened hours and daily closures due to staff shortages. This is less often the case here at the De Salaberry District Health Centre thanks to our doctors and nurses and support staff. The Emergency Department Hours of Operation are updated on a bi-weekly basis on Southern Health – Santé Sud’s web site: https://southernhealth.ca/emergency-schedules/
De Salaberry District Health Centre News
The STARS Manitoba MEU Program (STARS Mobile Education Day) was held at the De Salaberry District Health Centre on October 30. The day is held to enhance education of Staff and Physicians who provide care to our communities. It allowed staff to practice their hands-on skills and to communicate within a team. Both are so highly important in high stress situations. The event was greatly appreciated by all in attendance and will enhance our ability to provide high quality, safe, patient care. Thank you to our sponsors for the funds, food and coffee provided to make this day happen.
